Hebrews 9:27-28

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

The Bible tells us that we only have one chance in this life. All of us will stand before God at the great judgment. This is why we need a Savior, for without Christ we will stand before God with only our deeds and the intents of our heart. The good news tells us that, for those in Jesus Christ, God does not hold us to our deeds and intents, but Christ’s deeds and intents. This is what justified means. Christ’s record stands in place of ours.

Luke 6:35

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

The tradition of Advent is one of waiting for the promise of the coming King, but this King is one who is kind to those who oppose Him. So as we approach the Christmas season, don’t be charitable only with those you are comfortable with; take a step of faith and show kindness to the ungrateful and wicked with no expectation of return. It seems from this passage that God is pleased when we show kindness to those who are hard to love.
