Hebrews 9:27-28

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

The Bible tells us that we only have one chance in this life. All of us will stand before God at the great judgment. This is why we need a Savior, for without Christ we will stand before God with only our deeds and the intents of our heart. The good news tells us that, for those in Jesus Christ, God does not hold us to our deeds and intents, but Christ’s deeds and intents. This is what justified means. Christ’s record stands in place of ours.

Luke 6:35

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

The tradition of Advent is one of waiting for the promise of the coming King, but this King is one who is kind to those who oppose Him. So as we approach the Christmas season, don’t be charitable only with those you are comfortable with; take a step of faith and show kindness to the ungrateful and wicked with no expectation of return. It seems from this passage that God is pleased when we show kindness to those who are hard to love.

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

We are called to be unique in such a way that it brings illumination to all who are around us. Don’t wait for a dramatic event to be a witness for God. Instead, pay attention to the details of everyday life, for it is when we pay attention to the little things that we are preparing for the moments when our light shines the brightest.

1 Corinthians 15:57

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

As we talk of thanksgiving, don’t miss the greatest gift that you already have – the victory from sin and death. As the apostle Paul writes of the resurrection, he bursts forth into praise, and so should we. We have been delivered from the power of death. The resurrection stands as the ultimate statement of God to mankind; God is leading His people forward into victory through faith in Jesus Christ.

Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

Christianity is unlike other religions. Other religions say, “You obey, then you are accepted.” Christianity says, “You are accepted, therefore you can obey.” Our acts of worship are a response to God’s mercy, not to get God’s mercy. So rejoice today, and realize that you are already accepted through the work of the cross. Now you can live a life that is holy and pleasing to God.

Romans 7:21

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

The apostle Paul gives us a vulnerability that is rare in ancient writings. And thank God that he does! He gives us permission to face the problem that we all wrestle with – the sin nature. To ignore the sin nature is denial, to surrender to the sin nature brings defeat, but to see our sin through the cleansing work of the cross of Jesus Christ brings deliverance. Thanks be to God!

Psalm 119:18

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

It is particularly tempting to approach the Scriptures as an academic exercise for people who have been Christians for a long time. Yet the Scripture tells us over and over that unless God opens our eyes, we can miss wonderful things. The great nuggets of life and wisdom that reading the Bible can bring come to those who are able to humble themselves before God and say, “Open my eyes that I may see”. This makes the truth of God’s word dynamically available to the scholar and the novice alike.
