The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

When Jesus speaks, those who hear are amazed. The word “authority” is also where we get the word “author”. In other words, we are hearing from the source. Somehow the veil that we place over our heart comes off and we become aware that we are not hearing the voice of a man, but of God. This is the foolishness of the gospel, for when it is proclaimed, our hearts burn with passion, for we are moved by God Himself and not the moral behaviors that point to God.
